CakePHP - What is the lib folder for?

Is it for storing classes and functions which you will include in different controllers (or models, views, helpers, components etc.)? Up until now I've just been storing everything in helpers and components, but that would get messy with bigger applications, so it'd be useful if I could store my commonly used functions in separate files. Is this what the lib folder is intended for?
