  1. Sounds to me like you'd get better help on the forum that the above reply came from, or join an electronics forum. The questions you have asked can be answered with simple Google searches (What is a microcontroller?, What is a DPST relay? What is an Arduino?) Though, I know enough about electronics to answer your basic questions: A microcontroller is generally a single IC that can be programmed to carry out specific instructions. A relay is basically an electronic switch that allows one circuit to control another, DPST stands for Double Pole Single Throw, which is pretty much two switches in one. An Arduino is a branded product used for prototyping.
  2. I'm not sure if you realize this, but no one that uses these forums actually works for PHPFreaks, so PHPFreaks would be earning money off of other peoples generosity. For this to work, the people that are providing the help would need to be the ones getting paid, and for this, you could use the freelancing forum. A system that allowed anyone to help (and get paid) would have too many variables. Who gets paid if multiple people give you the right answer? What if someone correctly answers your question first, and then someone comes along and also answers your question but gives you a better response or more in-depth information? What if two people answer different parts of your question, etc. You can start to see how this wouldn't work brilliantly.
  3. The staff are pretty thin on the ground over here these days. I'm not sure how long you're likely to wait.
  4. Have you considered hosting your own with something like Trac, Arbit or Redmine?
  5. Not in IE6 without a bunch of hacking... As far as I'm aware, IE7+ doesn't have any major issues with image transparencies.
  6. I think it's because you're trying to re-assign $this on line 356...

    Notebook

I find it annoying writing code on one of my Macs as there isn't a # key, and I can never remember what the key-combo is to enter one. I suppose you could get used to this though if you use one every day. If it were me, I'd pick up a name brand laptop and install a Linux distro on it - There's a lot more to play and tinker with, especially for someone interested in taking those kind of courses.
  8. Heh, that one raised a smile

    Keyboard

Ugh, tell me about it. I had a Logitech MX 5000 (or something like that) keyboard / mouse combo a couple of years back and it had this LCD screen on it (cool, right) that you couldn't switch off, and drained the batteries like anyones business. Then, it decided to never want to work when booting my machine, I had to disconnect the BT receiver and then plug it back in for it to recognise the keyboard... Though, that might have just been down to poor Linux support.

    Keyboard

I wouldn't get any of them. They're all wireless and require batteries, and you never have any sitting around when they run out. Plus, they're probably made with scissor switches - I personally prefer proper mechanical switched keyboards.

    Keyboard

I use a Cherry G80-3000, nice clicky keys, comfortable to type on for long periods, no gimiky features, just a high quality keyboard.
  12. I turned an old mobile phone into a remote switching device for a computer ages ago, dial the number and it would turn on the computer...
  13. I'd spend some time writing a business plan and actually researching if there is any money to be made with "text-based role playing browser games" before you dive in with all of the development. Because on the surface, it doesn't sound like there is.
  14. How long do you think it will take, and what is your time worth? Everyone has different circumstances to you, so it doesn't matter what other people would charge.
  15. If you knew that we had a Misc board where you can ask anything, why did you post in the PHP Help board when you weren't looking for help with a PHP script you are writing? The obvious explanation is that you noticed it was the board with the most traffic and you thought you'd get your question answered quicker. Personally, if I was a mod, I'd have done the same thing - You knowingly posted in the wrong area because you thought that the rules didn't apply to you, and that your off-topic thread was more important that everyone else's who are actually trying to learn PHP rather than find a script to do something for them. The fact that you my have financially supported this board is irrelevant, it doesn't make you exempt from the rules.
  16. There's no reason why this should change, just because he is no longer an admin
  17. Works for me... Maybe the image is too large, or something.

    What country are you in?
  19. Yeah, there's some really funny stuff on there
  20. The colour red went out of fashion. Grey is the new red (and blue).
  21. Is that a restriction that has been set within PHP, or the server as a whole?
