  1. $60.00 per pc?!  That's crazy low.  I charge $129 to set a PC up, do an opt on it, and install AV/AS.  If they want recovery disks made, because computers (except for toshiba, dell, and apple) don't come with them, i charge $159.  Includes all above plus recovery. Then $49.00 for software suite installs.

  2. Obama/Biden

    McCain/Palin

Oklahoma has a bar-all policy.  If you don't get 250,000 people to sign for you, and pay your dues, you don't get to be put on the ballot.  End of story.

// That's as far as I come in this discussion.  I hate debates like this, many of the replies I've seen are uneducated (not all, but many), and people are just shooting the shit to "look" smart when in reality most are probably just 13 year old kids who couldn't vote, but heard mommy and daddy talking about it.  On that note, the keep the topic clean or it'll be closed.

  3. I wasn't that the sites weren't getting enough traffic, but the fact that most of them had been exploited from antiquated code.  So, until the development team has the chance to re-code them, they point to the respective forums here.  Currently, we are having a server set up to bring linuxforum.com back,  and the others will follow close behind, hopefully.

  4. Somewhere there will have to exist an OS.  There is no guarantee that that will be  M$ OS, but I highly doubt that M$ will drop its foothold in the near future.  They have to much going for them, apart from Windows.  Granted most of their software depends on Windows, but I don't see that being a problem for the guys at M$.

  5. Didn't they laugh at Nouriel Roubini when he said the global economy would collapse?

Trust me Windows and Microsoft desktop products are coming to end of their lifespan!

Reeealllly???  Okay,  what's going to replace them?  Linux?  Mac? I highly doubt that Windows will come to an end very soon. Even if Google plans to release its own OS, which they have talked about doing,  it might take YEARS for Google to push M$ out of the market.  I honestly don't see it happening unless M$ goes bankrupt or Bill Gates dies and the company just crumbles after his death.

  6. TBF, many people are moving away from windows in the Home.  Including older people.  My aunt/uncle have Ubuntu, my friends grandparents use Ubuntu, and I've set a couple family friends up with Ubuntu.  Not to mention that at walmart you can now get a free Ubuntu cd, which sits right next to the Windows Vista display.  Now I know Ubuntu isn't the BEST, but it is a move towards better things

  7. (1) Vista has been problematic, and they are slow to fixing the problems.  So the question stands, "Why are we working the Vista's successor when Vista still has miles of improvements that have yet to be covered."

    (2) Release in 32-bit and 64-bit?  Do they realize that most retail stores now ONLY carry 64-bit?  Hence, many software companies are making the move to be compliant with 64-bit.  If we are moving towards Windows 7, why not set the expectation for all software companies to develop for 64-bit and set the bar there (hardware companies too, i guess).  Lets do away with 32-bit.

    (3) As for pre-installed windows. Specialized shipments.  Best Buy has Geek Squad, right?  Special ship product to stores that have no OS on them.  Give the customer the choice of their computer (hardware only), OS's off the shelf (windows [pay], linux [ubuntu?], mac os [you can install mac os on a pc computer], etc).  The customer buys the software (where fees apply), buys the hardware (much cheaper stand-alone) and pays a fee (roughly $130 to install the OS, find the drivers, and set the unit up).  Granted they could carry standard computers as well, just a lower selection, because we all know that Wal-Mart and Circuit City will have standard computers.

  8. Yes, but then he has to figure in timezone manipulation for each user.  Oh, the javascript says this users time is this.  That relates to the server time like so, thus the updates will be done at this time (in users time zone).

    His way says:

Here is what time it is at our server location:  ##:##

Here is when the updates will be done in relation to our server time:  ##:##

  9. Honestly, talking politics is a touchy area.  When the topic gets out of hand mods/admins are pretty quick to jump on closing it.  With past experience with these topics, they become monitored pretty closely.

Not to mention the fact that there are some of us present who are VERY VERY opinionated and it can easily offend other people because you never know if your attacking someones religious or moral beliefs.

  10. In all honesty, the best way to learn is such:

    (1) Decide that you're going to develop a blog.  Doesn't have to be about anything particular.  My blog is used to post my latest programming achievements (sites completed, complex code that I finally solved, better ways to do things, etc.)

    (2)  Know that you're going to program it in PHP/MySQL.  Buy a domain name and some space.  Domains are cheap, and you get great hosting from http://www.webhostfreaks.com or http://www.serverpowered.com.  The first has a starter package at 3.99 per month and the second has great priced VPS all the way up to dedicated. Personally, I'd go with one of the lower packages off of webhostfreaks or a vps, and upgrade as you need.  Both sites are owned by PHPFreaks, and so when you upgrade (whether to bigger specs or between sites) you never worry about lose of data.

    (3) Find a tutorial (try to go OOP because you don't want to get stuck in procedural) that teaches you how to build a blog.  Go through it (don't copy and paste, actually learn what you're doing).  If you want to go straight to framework download CakePHP and use this link: http://book.cakephp.org/view/326/The-Cake-Blog-Tutorial

A blog will give you the basic understanding of sessions, cookies, authenticate, forms, display/insert/edit data in relation to a mysql database, etc.

Once you do that, go back and see what you can add. RSS?  MySQL Optimization?  Live stats?  Read your favorite feeds from other blogs?  Just have fun with it.

  11. Well, lets see.  Geek Squad charges 130 dollars to reload your OS and find all your drivers, do the windows updates, and remove free trial software.  If I were to do that I'd charge way way more.  The problem with people these days is they think it should all be for free, unless their doing the work then they don't care.  We can't give away free service because we ARE running a business. Honestly, if Geek Squad charged any less for services I probably wouldn't work there. Mainly because they wouldn't be able to afford me.  When I do work for people on the side I charge way more than our prices, but I'm also a tech with a degree.

  12. Some times I hate the "Geek Squad", because some times they are the ID10T.

My cousin used to work at Best Buy, and when the "Geek Squad" didn't know something they just told the person that their part was bad and they need to buy a new one.

There was this time, they told me that "Windows XP" only supports 2GB of RAM and not all of it will show... I disagreed and said it will support at least 3-3.5 and they still said it would only support 2GB in my head I laughed and said ID10T... My current "Windows XP" has 4GB of RAM (only 3GB shows up though).

Technically speaking, there was a time that Windows XP would not see beyond 2GB (back in the old DDR days and before SP1). You may not remember it, I don't know how old you are.  13? 14?  Anyways,  the information is out there.

Did your cousin work at Best Buy or at Geek Squad?  If he worked with Best Buy, aka if he was a Blue Shirt, then I would be inclined to believe your cousin didn't know what he was talking about because most people that see Geek Squad from the outside don't truly appreciate the work we do or understand half of what we tell customers.  If he worked for Geek Squad either he was wrong still, or whoever was in charge of his Precient didn't know what the hell he was doing.

  13. Free online play.....paid online play....required expansion for HD (which is now dead technology)......integrated blue-ray that outstrips most other standalone blue-ray players....backwards capabilities with your old ps games (PS3 has a upgrade for like $20 that allows it if you didn't get an original 80gb ps3)....not being able to play your old ps games...

That is how I see it.  I can't stand to pay for something that should be free.  PS3 online play is amazing, and Resistance ranks there with Halo.  Not to mention they also have COD4.  The blue-ray player is AMAZING.  Hi-Def games are just to good to pass up.  It also doubles as a media server!  I upgraded my HDD to a 1TB laptop sata drive and I store all my music, movies, pictures, etc.  on there.

X-BOX 360.  I had to buy and expansion for HD quality.  I had to pay for online play.  I couldn't play my past PS games on it (I've always been a PS fan).  Can you say,  Red Ring of Death (RRD)?  Yeah, and M$ will refund your money for the 360 but then you get stuck with all the games and the expansion HD drive.  So I had to sell those on E-Bay.

  14. Me: Thank you for calling the Geek Squad, how can I help you?

Cust:  Yes, is this the Geek Squad?

Me: YES.  How can I help you.

    Cust: Are you a Geek?

Me: Sure, now how can I help you?

Cust:  Do you work on computers?

Me: YES.  What is the problem you are having???

Cust:  I can't get my computer to turn on?

Me:  Is it a desktop or a laptop?

    Cust: It is a Gateway.

Me: Okay, but is it a desktop or a laptop? Is it a big computer or one you can carry?

Cust:  It fits in my bag and i can carry it.

Me:  Did you try to plug it in?

Cust:  The guy at the store said it was wireless.

Me:  Yes, the computer is capable of picking up wireless internet.  Did you plug in the computer to the power outlet?

Cust:  No, the guy said I could take it everywhere with me.

Me:  Yes, but it has a battery that needs charged when it dies.

Cust: I didn't get a charger for the battery.

Me:  Sir, I'm going to have to ask you to call Gateway because it sounds like an issue on their end.

    Cust: Okay, thank you.

    EDIT:

We call this an I-d-ten-t error, or id10t error :P

I swear that I could not handle that job, for reasons like this.  And I lol'd at the id10t error thing.

We actually say that in front of customers.  I just know one of these days we'll get caught, but oh well.
