  1. Aside from the template, I would expect a lightning bolt in there somewhere . You have a 12 year old company an no logo? If you do, your branding should really be on your website. I read through most content because I am also in the IT business and it seems to be leaning away from a professional feel. While I certainly respect your service, I doubt clients want to hear about your personal history. I think you have to take more of a business approach rather than sounding like a one man squad, unless this is really what you are after. The site isn't bad and describes what you do, but lacks polish that makes me feel confidence. I know this is somewhat comparing apples to oranges, but take a look at the geeksquad website.. http://www.geeksquad.com/ Same market, just on a different scale.

  3. Thanks guys, I've installed it on my dev and production servers.
  4. Anyone have experience installing and using this extension? I was thinking about creating a progress bar for file uploads because the project I'm working on will have rather large upload sizes, roughly 2-10 MB. I was reading about APC and I'm installing it on my dev box now. Just curious if anyone has experimented with it.
  5. Flash certainly has its place as creative media. Works great for entertainment such as movie and game websites and also can serve rich content to other selected markets. It really depends on many factors, but to say don't use flash because you don't personally like it isn't very helpful to people who may be trying to learn.
  6. To be safe you can avoid using padding on containing elements and set margins on the child elements. For example if you have a sidebar set to 200px wide, you probably don't want to set your padding on the sidebar container, but set margins on the child elements like p, ul, h1-h5, etc. This is a safe way to avoid box model problems.
  7. As I recall, some of this article has already been disproven, for example copying variables does not consume more memory. Using getters and setters as far as I was taught is good practice and the technically correct way of getting and setting object variables.
  8. You use literals in MYSQL, even so your logic would currently be wrong because you are using AND. SELECT * FROM table WHERE something = 'something' OR 'something_else = 'something_else'
  9. Your footer says "Design by Free CSS Templates". So are you the original designer of the website? If not, you are in violation of the posting rules for this board. @Gabs, funny I just saw a new thread with the same exact post from you.
  10. First, you need to understand the box model, this is how the full width is determined by the width, borders, padding. This can be rendered different from browser to browser. Second, why are you wrapping your code in a table? Third, I'd suggest learning some CSS shorthand, you are writing too much code.
  11. Better yet, why would you want to echo the entire table that way? The nice thing about PHP is that you can open and close PHP tags as much as you wish. <table width='914' border='1'> <tr> <td> </td> <td> </td> <td> </td> <td> </td> <td>Welcome: <?php echo $row['FirstName'] ." ". $row['LastName']; ?></td> <td>Date: <?php echo date('M,d,Y'); ?></td> </tr> That is my personal preference anyway in most cases.
  12. Overall, I think it looks pretty nice. Why the hosting ad at the top? The logo certainly can use some help, it is very boring and should stand out a little more in my opinion. You have no branding at the moment. I don't like the rather large gap between your content area and the right column . With that large banner I'd consider increasing your font size, things are not very proportioned very well as it is right now. The red links on the dark grey background are tough to read and don't look right. Usually in a portfolio section you get a little bit of information about what you did for the client, also maybe a thumb or small image that will lead to a larger graphic so the user doesn't necessarily have to go to the client website. Your portfolio just shows a small graphic and takes your directly to the client site, I don't really like that. Like I said, overall, looks pretty good, but can use some fine tuning.
  13. I agree... while I'm getting used to keyboards with no numpads (my laptop for instance), I personally do prefer keyboards with it. From what I have read, according to Apple's research, they have found that not too many people are making use of the numpad apparently (I guess in observation tests) . If you ask me, it's more an excuse for Apple to shave off manufacturing costs by removing that aspect of the keyboard (thankfully, people can still buy a version of the keyboard with one - just perhaps not a wireless version.. but maybe there is that option too.. I'm not too knowledgeable about that kind of thing). My bigger concern is the 'magic mouse'. I wonder if it will get on peoples' nerves more than anything else. And I agree they are definitely overpriced. They are becoming more affordable though. I would like an iMac so that I can have the best of both worlds, Snow Leopard and windows (after installing Win 7 through bootcamp that is). I have lost out on graphic job opportunities due to not knowing how to use a Mac Shouldn't be hard to pick up on using a mac. When I started my current job I really didn't know much about macs, but I had to support about 750 workstations/laptops. OS X was still relatively new then, but the OS is relatively simple to learn. I've watched the evolution of the mac over the years which is why I can say firsthand that they have made dramatic improvements, but I still think I'll always prefer windows. And I think the new mouse will be a failure. Give me a simple mouse with 2 buttons and a scroll wheel any day. I have an iMac G5 in my office and use a dell mouse with it
  14. I don't understand the laptop sized keyboard on a desktop computer. I set up a 24 inch imac not that long ago for my boss and it has one of those baby keyboards, no numpad, I don't understand. Apple has certainly come a long way, but I still believe they are overpriced, but are aesthetically nice.
  15. I think the key difference, although the same concept is that the cloud represents a network of servers, rather than one big mainframe. In the end I like to have power at my fingertips, not in the air so to speak.
  16. I get deterred once I see what people bid on most jobs. I can't work for the wages that some others seem to be happy with.
  17. You can always get a reseller account if you don't know anything about server administration. I offer hosting only for my clients that I develop for, so I have full control over everything and they never really have any need or desire to access a control panel. This allows me to give full support and customization for their website needs.
  18. They send out ICANN notices when you need to check your contact information. I currently use godaddy for all domain registrations and have used them for hosting. I never had any real issues with them and their support works pretty quick. I once had a hosting account auto-renew when I didn't want it to and they quickly refunded my money.
  19. I'm thinking about getting a netbook or mini. I really only want it for small tasks, but a key thing I do want is an HDMI output to hook up to my plasma for netflix or any other movies I may want to watch. Just curious if anyone here has any suggestions from experience or readings. I was checking out the HP mini http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/computer_can_series.do?storeName=computer_store&category=notebooks&a1=Category&v1=Mini&series_name=mini311_series&jumpid=in_R329_prodexp/hhoslp/psg/notebooks/Mini/mini311_series
  20. There is potential, but there are a lot of things that bother me at this point, in particular the grid is not aligned very well. I like the main background image and how it fades nicely into the page, but you are wasting way too much space to the right of the text. In addition, something doesn't look right about the main text at the top. I think you should ditch the border around the white semi-transparent background and make the background slightly more opaque. The logo does not fit in to the page very well, it needs some work and better attention. The latest news stands out too prominent, it is of little importance to most potential visitors I'm sure. The outer glow/drop shadow also is distracting, things shouldn't all looked stacked. that is enough for me to start I think.
  21. First, you don't have an option for score in your table, is that being saved in another table? The basic concept is pretty simple. Once you submit the form, you must check the form value. So you may have something like: $question_id = $_POST['questionid']; $answer_given = $_POST['answer']; Then you run a query in your database to see if that matches the correct answer SELECT * FROM table WHERE questionid = $question_id and correctionoption = $answer_given; If a result is found you can increase the player score by one, however that is stored.
  22. The lottery is only 6 numbers, any idea on the combination of those numbers.
  23. They that isn't saying much about your potential if you say your own work looks like a child drew it. You're not going to find something that fits your exact aesthetic requirements. What you were provided with is a means to an end, now you must make it appear as you wish.
  24. A "pure php page" should still be rendered with correct html markup. You can easily add you doctype and head section before your first <?php tag.
