a mysql db is just basically data storage, mysql is the commands to retrieve and do what you want with the stored data, but php by itself does not have to use a mysql db to work it can use several other database storages too such as oracle for example. learning mysql is simply just to learn how to add, delete and modify data from a mysql database using it\'s commands. it\'s not really a language, but in truth you could learn the whole of php without ever touching mysql or even knowing what it is, so if that were the case and you came to try it, it would be just like learning a new language because of the command syntax\'s and etc to do what it is you want with database storage
