So the only way to accept payments through creditcards is to go through some sort of gateway? Do all of these cost money? If so, does anybody know a cheap one?

Hello all, I've recently started developing my first site where I actually have to sell something, now up until this point I hadn't actually thought about creditcard payment options, and honestly don't know anything about it, so if anybody could point me in the right direction on how to get this done, or something to give me a bit more information it would be greatly appreciated.
