  1. Hi there,

Im searching for a yahoo/Google/MSN group type scripts. But not really getting satifying results. I thought these groups are called mailing lists. But mailing lists don't have topic/thread creation. I need that. is there any script you guys know, that can do it?

  2. Why do guys like you are so so confident that open source product means always the best and will always rule.
    Let's see.

    Hmm.

Maybe because it's completely free, anyone can use it on any computer, the source code is public so if there is something about it that isn't perfect that you don't like, you can change it to be exactly how you want it.

The millions of people that use it can all contribute their improvements to it?

There's just to many benefits to list. You'd have to be pretty retarded to think that Apache is going to die just become of some FLAWED statistic on some random website. People just aren't THAT gullible nowadays (at least MOST aren't).

Stop flaming PHP and Apache already, it's getting old. And your stale, repeated arguments are now very boring.

Did you get cyber-molested by a PHP script when you were little or something?

I wonder what is wrong with you guys. I told you I love php and apache. My purpose was not to show that php and apache are dead, It was to show that IIS and asp.net is not something to be ignored, it is getting strong day by day. Thats all.

  3. The halo hype is reaching its zenith. It seems every now and than there is a new controversy regarding halo. Sony was busted vandalizing halo on wikipedia and now time is under gamer's wrath as they posted a cover story on halo and told shit about gaming in general. MS is doing everything to feed halo this sep. A quote from an article

Imagine, if you will ... a perfect storm of Halo 3 insanity come September 25th. You venture to 7-Eleven in your Pontiac G6 GXP that has been fully pimped out in Halo fashions. You pick up a 44-ounce Slurpee -- your cup plastered with images of the Master Chief -- and make your way to GameStop, bumping Marty O'Donnell tracks from your Halo 3 Zune. Legendary Edition in hand, you cruise over to Burger King where you get a Double Whopper meal complete with Halo branding on the wrappers. When you arrive, your Halo Xbox 360 is ready and gobbles up the disc. A vegetative state is assumed as you only so much as twitch to take a sip from your Halo 3 Mountain Dew.

Halo is already compared to star wars franchise. Now MS wants to top

  4. PHP is indeed a great language. But what is happening to it recently? Most pro programmers of desktop or other enterprise platforms think php is a spagetty language, they have sort of a feeling that it is not classy enough to be used by them.

I kinda find php similar to windows. Both are user friendly, ubiquitous in their turf that os market and server side scripting, both bashed by critics for security and design flaws, take years to adopt new versions and so on.

  5. Just look at the netcraft survey resultshere. IIS is really pushing hard in the last 1 year while apache continuously losing ground. In the august survey, netcraft says IIS may even surpass apache at 2008 in this rate. there is no sign of it slowing down so those peoples who said IIS is dead should look at it one more time. The open source apache is losing its 10 years old dominance. In 2005 it was 71% while IIS 20% a 50% gap. Now apache is 50% and IIS 35% so the gap just 15%. Alarming for php coders, Asp.net is getting really popular these days. also there is almost twice more asp.net jobs than php. The ruby threat is also there. asp.net is not threated by it as both have different set of users. Is it time to learn asp.net?

I've been a regular visitor at PHPFREAKS.com and you always bring up these stories. I think the last time it was something to do with php losing its open source right.

    - You got to stop wasting your time and looking through those stuff. The truth is Apache has been dominating and will be dominating! And even if isn't hosts will not lose it. Since its cheap and a lot of people will depend it. Anything on the web is slow moving! You think 35 million people will want to learn asp.net because of these stats?

You seriously have to become logical and practical. Common Sense.

Me bringing up stories? ??? ??? You must be mistaken. i don't remember posting anything such as php losing open source right and all that. I have probably posted 4-5 topics.

That is what I want to prove. Why do guys like you are so so confident that open source product means always the best and will always rule. Why would apache will "always be dominating". I love apache. I use apache. Just like I use windows. I measure a softwares caliber through what it has, how proffitable it is to me. That is what everyone do. So, PRACTICALLY people will use what is best for them. That is why windows is 90% in the desktop market and also the leader in the server market. Yes, you heard right. Windows is sold more than linux and unix now. There has to be something that makes people buy IIS and windows servers. Even though linus is free.

Than why this pride that linux/apache will always rule the server market. Nobody can be winner a unless they work hard for it. Open source fan seems to don't understand this. They just think, MS software is crap. They will loose in the end. But the result, MS is not only uneffected in desktop market but actually taking out linux in its own turf- the servers.

The purpose of this topic was not to make php programmers switch to IIS, it was to show them that IIS is not something to be ignored anymore. It is as strong as lamp is now a days.

Im sure you program in php because you get money(TheFilmGod), So PRACTICALLY and LOGICALLY learning a new technology that has more twice as more job as php is a viable decision. I wanted people to think about it; to show what the trend is. So that they can't just brush off IIS as once a open source advocate said few years back,"IIS is dead". It was probably unconscious but has risen as has MS in the server market and that also quite well.

  6. Ya most of those IIS/ASP ones are just parked domains so the statistics are pretty useless.

Apparently it can't even detect what OS/webserver I'm running. Says unknown.

Doesn't seem very dependable to me.

So ya, you should pretty much take that thing with a grain salt.

Don't take it so lightly either. netcraft is doing this survey for 12 years and is recognised by the industry. And they make sure which domains are active. They even recognise how many servers a site has. So, not so useless indeed. the truth is IIS is threatning apache quite well. There is another survey conducted by fortune mag that track 1000 top sites. IIS is running 85% of them. So, just brushing it off is not such a good idea. Just think, there was a time when very few hosts provided windows hosting. But now almost all hosts have windows hosting available.

  7. imagemagick is although powerful than GD but GD is native in php while imagemagick must be used through shell commands. So, GD is available in most servers.

I use a mixture of both, just because some tasks are easier and quicker in one rather than the other. I find things like captchas easier to code using GD, but doing simple things such as re-size/scaling and cropping a lot quicker and easier using ImageMagick.

There are some really cool classes for GD available at phpclasses that can make these image manipulation a breeze.

  9. Hi there,

I live in a country which is not supported by paypal. But I still have to use paypal. My question is, can I use visa/master cards issued from my country to verify my paypal account?

I heard visa/master cards can be used worldwide, so technically a card issued in my country can be used while im abroad. Is it true?

last question, is visa debit card has the same worldwide acceptance as visa credit card?

  10. Clarification: The server is linux/apache. I don't have much access to the server: no cpanel, no cron jobs, nothing but secure ftp. My account is messed up - I have access to the entire server including all /var, /etc, and so on, so I can read the conf files for Apache if that helps. However, I prefer not to muck about in an area where I shouldn't be.

if you don't have GD installed, why don't you install it?

You can use dynamic .so libraries that can be used wiithout having to recompile PHP. Im sure you have access to that server isn't it?

Wow, this sounds promising - I'm very much a newbie when it comes to these sort of things, so bear with me:

I gather that I need the admins to add 'extension=php_gd2.so' (or the equivalent library) in the php.conf file. They also need to place php_gd2.so in the modules directory.

Where do I download php_gd2.so (I couldn't find it on the server. :()? Will there be different library versions for different versions of php (the school's server is running php 4.3.9)?

Thanks so much for all your help. I just need these two questions answered and I might be able to get the admins to set this up for me.

yes, extension=php_gd2.so will do it, not in php.conf; its php.ini. You will place the .so file in the extension directory specifyed in the php.ini file. Look at it; you will know where to put the file. You can search the web to look for .so libraries. search for "php gd2 shared library/object".

  11. Im not saying he is the greatest philanthropist in the world when counting ones generosity. Im not comparing his generosity. We can never judge that. im counting his impact on the world. What impact he has on the world as whole and what influence he had on other rich people.

Im obviously not saying he is the greatest person. Im saying he is the greatest person when it comes to changing the way philanthrpy has worked before and how people are being helped.

Its not the race of who is the greatest man. its the race of who can make this world better than anyone else.

  12. Nothing else, jus that it appeared you had a bit of an obsession, using his photo as your avatar, then including his photo in a thread about your mugshots. Though to be fair, not everyone has followed the thread ;)

I admire the guy too, his businesss sense and contribution to technology is just brilliant - Though I wouldn't agree with your comment that he is the greatest "money giver", Warren Buffet probably deserves that title, he did, after all, donate USD 30 Billion dollars (that's over 80% of his fortune) to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation...

So this topic is getting someattension isn't it? :)

I will not call that obsession. We need Idol and I see him to be the perfect example. Well Warren Buffet not really donated 30 billion doller. He signed a trity that will give the gates's a portion of money amout of money per year. With some obligations like the gates's have to be alive and in charge of the operation. So he actually donated probably 2-3 billion? while gates's have donated about 20-30 billion. So big G is still the biggest "money giver".

His business strategies although not liked by his rivals but the most effective, which says monopoly is efficient, compettition a waste.

Yes, a monopoly is most effective - for the ones who control it. For the users, though, it's not so great. They're forced to use the crap that they produce, pay the prices that they set, and deal with their insensitivity towards the users needs, opinions, and privacy. There are a great many of us who are very grateful that we have a choice, and that we don't have to use Microsoft products.

He can be crazy for success but not for money. He is the greatest "money giver" after all.

Yes, he donates money to charities and there's the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, but what do you bet that those donations don't even put a dent in his pocketbook? I quote the Bible, from a story commonly known as The Widow's Offering. I realize that everyone isn't Christian, but that doesn't mean that there is no wisdom in this:

And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much.

And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing.

And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury:

For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.

While he may be donating millions of dollars to wonderful causes, it doesn't actually say very much for his generosity - he can afford it. i think the greatest "money givers" are those who may not be able to afford it, yet they give anyway.

Im sure any tech person would want to be big G.

Not I, and I'm sure that there are quite a few who who feel the same way.

Well, people who have little money can contribute little. SO their contribution has very little impact on the world. But the big G alone is giving more money than  any government in the world. He has also inspired other billionears to follow his footsteps. So, that is some big impact. That's why I said he is the greatest philanthropist. Many can give money, But being what he is and than giving such huge proportion of money is not easy. He lost his #1 spot for giving money too. Many people can see that as a sign of decline. But is it?

he couldv'e easily chose to be like the owner of wallmart and make his children "rich". But he chose to give all his money to the world and make his children do what they should do, earn their way themselves. Not many can do that.

  13. Here is a true mugshot. probably the most famous

Do you have a thing for Big G?

I like that guy. I think he is the greatest techno guy this world can ever have. His business strategies although not liked by his rivals but the most effective, which says monopoly is efficient, compettition a waste. He can be crazy for success but not for money. He is the greatest "money giver" after all.

Im sure any tech person would want to be big G.

    anything else? ???

  14. Hi there,

I have spent a fare amount of time with mediawiki and infact actually created a forum for that. I still consider MW the most complex php app I have ever seen. But its login features are mostly simple. Just edit the localsettings.php and change permissions. Although you will not find anything in the localsettings.php. all the settings are in the includes/defaultsettings.php so go though that file back to fourth. You will see loads of configuration options and permissions there. just pick up which one you want to edit and put it in the localsettings.php; dont edit the defaultsettings.

  15. Only stupid sites like microsoft still use javascript/activex for presentation. If a site won't even display right without javascript, it shouldn't even exist.

Which sites are stupid in your opinion?

Loads of big sites still use JS and many of us still consider flash sites cool which is worse than even JS. CSS is not yet the all solving guru. It can never be without in-built logic which unfortunately only IE supports. So much for worse browser.

  16. Wow... You must be married. :D

    ME?

You gotta be kidding me. :D

Im 18 years old. And considering the fact that Im a total nerd. I don't think I will ever install wife 1.0 ;)

Ahh. what a peaceful life. 8)

  17. The fun about php is most libraries are already been written a zillion times by someone else. So, Im on the lazy side. Whenever I need some new functionality I just hit phpclasses or hotscripts. If that doesn't have any solution than I offcourse "Live It". Still no help, than I just keep looking until I find the closest I can get so simple mods can get me what I want. If still unsuccesful than I would have to code myself but that never happened. So...
