preg_match_all is what you are looking for and it should capture all the information you want.

I just felt like nit picking, if you want to check if it is not empty, use empty which will do an is set check as well. However, if you want to know if the variable has been previously set, and do not care if it is empty, false, null etc or not isset is the way to go.

Check out what a delimiter is ( http://php.net/preg_match ) there should be a link on the manual. To fix your issue: if(preg_match('#t.#', "{$SandTs[$i]}")){ In this case we are using # as the delimiter.

Doing some error handling will help you diagnose the problem next time. For now, your issue lies with not putting a string in single quotes. $select_fighter = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM fighters WHERE promotion='UFC' ORDER by id ASC"); For better error handling that would tell you there is an error: $select_fighter = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM fighters WHERE promotion=UFC ORDER by id ASC") or trigger_error('Query Failed: ' . mysql_error());
