  1. Yes, I want to set, update, and show server session vars (php).

Actually I am using some ajax framework found here:  http://www.robertnyman.com/ask/

The problem is , within the ajax calls, I am unable to reference, display, or alter any session data whatsoever.

I assumed I would be able to use ajax to run a .php page that simply had "session_start();" in it and gain access that way. But it simply does not display the session data.

I am a js newbie, so I may be in over my head here, but after some research, I think it has something to do with "race conditions". something like this: http://www.chipmunkninja.com/g@

and another guy with the same problem http://codeigniter.com/forums/viewthread/76343/

So now I just use the iframe to edit and store my session vars, but actually that still does not allow me to display  any session vars within a page being run via an ajax request.

They will only show when I reload a fresh page.

  2. Hello, I'm a js  newbie so all help is appreciated.

Suppose I had a site that sold wallets.

I would want to use some js to dynamically change the wallet type (bifold, trifold, etc) , wallet color, and possibly other variables (im not really selling wallets, just an example).

Currently I know how to make a call to the js function to dynamically change things based on user input.

The function also currently "saves" the user variables by writing the variables onto a link that loads into a hidden iframe. The link serves as _GET vars, and I can simply store them as session vars within the referenced page.

My question is if this practice is "common" and if its "good practice".

And if anyone knows of a better way to store vars via js, do tell.

    Thanks

  3. That information has already been highlighted.

But if we do a google search as to the current state :

    http://www.google.com/search?source=ig&hl=en&rlz=&q=is+youtube+profitable&btnG=Google+Search

We can see that actually they are saying now that IT IS  profitable!

So our mistake. I admit  I was wrong. But hey, if you guys were paying attention, please read as to HOW they are profitable.

To sum it up, google is able to make youtube profitable because they unleash their adsense network onto it.

But you have to realize THEY ARE THEY OWNERS OF THE ENTIRE ADSENSE NETWORK.

So they get money by serving them up, not by "participating in them"

Does that make sense? The most us non googlers can do, is participate in adsense.

    Google OWNS it man!

They use their muscle to control such a beast and to  , unbelievably, make it profitable!

I must note, I only skimmed it, since I am ...at work... but that was the overall point I took from it, and also, that its still being debated as to whether or not the numbers do indeed work.

  4. That's pretty funny - asking for user opinions, and then defending all your positions.

If you want to call me a liar, go ahead and think I'm lieing, but just don't ask people to view your site then.

I did browse your site, and REGARDLESS if you have categories, search, tags, etc, if i do not see them, or can not find them, then you tellling me they are there means nothing.  Are you going to tell every single one of your visitors how to use your site?

There is a simple rule you should learn: People are kind of dumb.

I hope no one takes offense to that because I do not mean to say all of you, are specifically dumb. And I certainly don't walk down the street calling people dumb. But really what it DOES do , is allow you to offer the best and simplest products. If you assume peopel are dumb, that they won't read stuff, that they won't find things, then you will eventually make your product the best it can be , be developing around that concept.

Which brings us full circle to your little post there. It is illogical to defend your opinions, against the opinions of a user; I am the user, you are not. I didn't sit there and code that thing for billions of years, I don't particular have any biased interest in your site (as all users won't )

You have a 3 second window to convince me that your site is valuable, and I didn't see it. There is no arguing with that... how can there be?

Remember, I'm dumb, I don't want to have to FIND the search bar orcategories. This isn't an easter egg hunt.  I don't want to have to THINK about how your site works. I don't want to read 80 pages of the constitution. But hey, that's just me (a typical nobody, online user)

Lastly, regarding the whole money making thing:

    1. You are not google.

    2. The first video on the HOME page of your site has a total of 12 views today (1 of which is mine)

Before this turns into a pissing contest, all I want to say is that I personally am all for you making money. It really doesn't affect me much, so why wouldn't I want to see you succeed. I don't know you at all, so really there is absolutely no benefit to seeing you "fail".

Therefore based on that, you should realize that all of our comments are meant to be constructive. You don't have to defend yourself. You come off as if you are raking in billions of dollars and we are all just so ignorant of how to make money via video sites. All we are saying is that as a historical fact, the biggest, and best video site out there, is not turning a profit. That's it.

So my point about the whole 12 views on the home page is simply to highlight the fact that we are not discouraggns you from making your couple of hundred per month, or hey who knows, maybe a couple of thousand , all we are really doing is exactly what you asked of us - giving you OUR feedback.

  5. I think your portfolio images are fine, but there should really be thumbnails.

To take that further, I would suggest putting your past designs (the product you are selling, i.e your services)

right smack on the home page.

I learned this the hard way.  But here's my advice.

Your webpage is trying to sell something right. In this case its your services. But your services are not something tangible. So what IS tangible? Well its the actual sites that you have actually created.

This makes your product tangible, and customers NEED something tangible. They want to SEE, FEEL , TOUCH, SMELL, what they are getting for their hard earned money.

So logically we'd want to capitalize and completely focus on making your product tangible.

You can very easily do this by putting juicy screen shots of your work right on the front page.

Maybe even a "before and after" or "this is what your site COULD look like"

    Stuff like that.

The stuff on the front page now is nice and all, but maybe your customers don't know the technical aspects of coding, and therefore, if they don't know about it, they cannot care about it.

If i don't know what those terms are on your home page, then I can't value them.

What is unanimously valueable though, is as I said, the tangible product you are delivering.

Btw your screen shot DOES look great. So as a customer I would look at that and say "hey our site doenst look like that, this guy must know what hes' doing"

Again most here on the forum would understand the difference between looks and actual programming, but we are not your customers, your customers are your customers.

    Give them what they want.

    Hope this helps

  6. The site looks way too busy in my point of view.

I have no idea what category I am in. I have no idea if there are even video categories?

There is no search. Essentially i am presented with  A BILLION video options, all of which seemingly have

no organization, no genre, no tags, no nothing.

I don't want to sound like im just complaining, but from a user standpoint, I would consider these serious issues.

I watched a video about some lady talking about religion - after that, I was lost, so I really didn't ever go back.

Additionally, youtube is a money losing business. It's only possible because google has money to lose.

So how do you propose to scale this?

  7. Just a suggestion , but the first thing that jumped out at me was how wide your pages are.

I know your pages are liquid and thats the point, but from a reader's perspective it is easier to read if it has generous left-right padding. Another thing you can do is float a big image right and have the text on the left side.

Everyone likes to see pictures, and it make the text length shorter, more concise and therefore, much easier to read.

It's scientifically more strenuous to have your eyes move that far from left to right. Think of how newspapers are layed out.

    HOpe this helps

Oh yeah, I have a 22" widescreen, so obviously, this exemplifies the problem.

  8. I don't know about that specific site and product, but here's a general rule of thumb:

Anything can work, so long as you do the work...

People assume that there is a product they can buy that will make them millions without them doing ANYTHING.

That is called fooling yourself and you'd deserve to get your money taken.

There are tons of REAL cases of people making the kind of money they talk about. Again, I can't speak for that exact product, but in general, the concept of affiliation, automation, ppc, adwords, all that stuff IT DOES WORK.

Just don't fool yourself into believing its automatic, because if it was, you wouldn't be doubtful in the first place.

  9. Hey, I actually really liked my first impression of it. It is very clean.  I understand you really don't have much content on there

at all, but I assume you want some critique on the overall layout.

    I like it.

One thing I have an issue with is the right pane where it says "capture it, upload it, comment it".

That right column jumped out at me as just another space for ads, so I dismissed it immediately. It wasn't untill my 3rd look

that I finally realized it wasn't an ad, but rather part of your site.

Other than that I think you should keep the simplicity and "straight to the point" type design, and the idea isn't that bad either.

We'll need to see how the site actually functions though, in order to provide more feedback.

If you can, take a look at my post too. It's 3 or 4 posts down in this thread, Since no one is commenting maybe you can give me some feedback.

  10. Hi, this is quite honestly my first post. I do not intend on posting and bailing, as I am a lover of code.

So I'll be hanging around here when I can.

    My site is: www.apsurd.com

Please give your opinions and feedback on anything you feel is relevant.

The site's current purpose is to collaborate with customers.

For example if they don't know how a particular service looks,

I can link them to it, as well as product descriptions, and quotes.

Here is an example of the quoting system:

    http://www.apsurd.com/services/breakdown.php?prod=g18500&share=10-2&qty=16&spc=1

I hand coded 95% of this site with notepad ++

It takes me forever, but I enjoy coding.

P.S. The user login pages actually do work, but there's not a lot that is "live" so I have not set up a test account.

    Thanks all. ;D
