Lightcutter

I am very new to PHP. I used a tutorial to write a very simple file upload script and now he would like email notification of when file is uploaded. I have looked all over for sample code and snippets, or a tutorial. I am very motivated to learn, but if this is something someone had already implemented (I am sure it is) can they point me in the right direction to somewhere I can read up on this type of function. So, like many of you here I am new to php. I have written some very very simple scripts, and am going to take some calsses in the spring, but will be trying lots of stuff out now.
