Why recreate the wheel? Most opensource platforms are created by developers, used by the same and tweaked along the way. So the older platform, the more stable it becomes. This is usually the case although last time I looked Magento had something like more then 10,000 files. This can be a huge learning curve but I don't think a developer could sit down a code such functionality within 6 months or even a year....(debugging, stabilizing, etc)
