Best Linux Distro for programmer

    I want to use linux but i don't know what is the best distro to use.

If you're planning on programming in PHP, any distro will work - Arch, Debian, or Ubuntu are my suggestions for the beginning Linux user.

 

If you're planning on programming in c or cpp, I recommend Gentoo (my favorite distro). It's designed in such a way that you never have to install -devel packages; the headers come along whenever you install a package.

for web progarmming I suggest using debian, ubuntu, pclinux or mepis. If c or c++ or java I prefer slackware or gentoo, and maybe debian as apt-get is easy to keep your system up to date. Course portage is really nice also.

I vote debian, or anything debian based for that matter (ubuntu, pyro, good os)

 

gNewSense is a great completely free as in speech distro endorsed by the fsf

 

note that ubuntu 8.04 has some serious problems with your main development tool...firefox. I'd stick with gutsy for now, or downgrade ff

1st. What files I needed to download (pls provide me the list ) I prefer live cd.

2nd. How to create a live cd for it.

Burn the image to a disc. Make sure your CD drive is set to boot before your hard disc in the BIOS and reboot with the disc in drive. It should boot into Fedora.

well this isnt really the best linux but i like freebsd its not really for noobs but its user friendly(after you set up kde or xfce(i use xfce) has some good dev tools that are prepackaged and its free

its also great for running a server!!

remember that fedora isn't debian based;

it also uses yum repositories; apt is much better.

 

anyways, as a Kubuntu user, I'd point you towards that

+1 for gentoo. Only for the linux experienced, though.

 

Nubuntu = can't go wrong if you're a windows user.

Ubuntu or Debian, for the package management system. Apart from that, pretty much anything, though Zenwalk comes with a nice set of development tools preinstalled.
