How to avoid javascript popups upon page refresh

I have a page, which has a button in it (say Notes), clicking on it opens a popup box, if I dismiss the popup box and do a page refresh, the popup box comes up again, how to avoid this.
We have used session variables, but still of no use.
Any suggestion or a different method of doing this?

what code u using? i cant understand a button u have to click making a popup window after a refresh as surely the button has to be pressed as on the first time u visit the page?
