In a bid to rid this forum of similar questions being asked numerous times, I have pinned this read-only topic which will contain the most commonly requested expressions. This topic will be updated as and when we deem neccisarry.

//Validating E-Mail addresses
if(!eregi("[A-Z0-9._%-]+@[A-Z0-9.-]+\.[A-Z]{2,4}",$email)) echo "Invalid E-Mail address.";

//Validating UK format dates (DD/MM/YYYY), can be easily rearranged for other formats
if(!eregi("(0[1-9]|[12][0-9]|3[01])[\/](0[1-9]|1[012])[\/]([0-9]{4})",$date)) echo "Invalid date.";
Thanks for reading :)

You can find lots of various free expressions at:
http://regexlib.net

Please check there first before starting a new topic asking for expression help.

SemiApocalyptic European date expression is fine, however, it allows for spaces or other characters to be before and/or after the date. If you're trying to validate an entered date from a form, use "^$" in the expression. Below is a modified version, where it allows a forward slash (/) or dash (-) to be used as a separator, and it only allows years in the range between 1900 and 2999 (i.e. 31-12-2005).
if (preg_match('/^(0[1-9]|[12][0-9]|3[01])[\\/-](0[1-9]|1[012])[\\/-](19[0-9]{2}|2[0-9]{3})$/', $input_date)) {
    echo 'Date entered is valid';
} else {
    echo 'Date entered is not valid';
}

Similar to the above features, use this expression for US date MM/DD/YYYY:
if (preg_match('/^(0[1-9]|1[012])[\\/-](0[1-9]|[12][0-9]|3[01])[\\/-](19[0-9]{2}|2[0-9]{3})$/', $input_date)) {
    echo 'Date entered is valid';
} else {
    echo 'Date entered is not valid';
}

Please note that these date expressions allow a February date to have more than 28/29 days.

SemiApocalyptic email address expression is fine for practical email address verification today, however, it allows for spaces or other characters to be before and/or after the email address. If you're trying to validate an entered email from a form, use "^$" in the expression like so:
if (preg_match('/^[A-Z0-9._%-]+@[A-Z0-9.-]+\.[A-Z]{2,4}$/i', $input_email)) {
    echo 'Email entered is valid';
} else {
    echo 'Email entered is not valid';
}

The RFC822 email address specification is not practical since it allows almost anything to be valid. The expression to conform to RFC822 is below but I don't recommend using it.
if (preg_match('/(?:(?:\r\n)?[ \t])*(?:(?:(?:[^()<>@,;:\\".\[\] \x00-\x1F]+(?:(?:(?:\r\n)?[ \t])+|\Z|(?=[\["()<>@,;:\\".\[\]]))|"(?:[^\"\r\\]|\\.|(?:(?:\r\n)?[ \t]))*"(?:(?:\r\n)?[ Thanks for pointing that out Toplay, I'm still somewhat of a novice when it comes to RegEx!
