Screen Resolution

I have always designed websites that are optimised for 800 x 600 resolution screens, but Im beginning to find this quite limiting in my design.  I cant even remember the last time I saw a 800 x 600 res screen

So, my question to you is, do you think its necessary to optimise for 800 x 600, or can I take a step up the size ladder?

You should start to design using CSS so your sites look good no matter what size screen they're displayed on, within reason. This is usually called fluid or liquid web design. Here are some links to pages that describe the techique:

Most people use 1024*768 screens resolutions now a days. very few people will be using 800*600 screens. However to make sure your site looks good in any resolution you should use percentages rather than fixed widths. With percentages your sites becomes fluid.
