phpfreeaks own site technology

Recommended Posts

Hi,
hope i am not asking an often seen Q. The phfreaks.com site has a lot of the features I am looking for, I was wondering what technologies have you guys used to build your own site? Did you code everythign from scratch?
I want guests and users to be able to rate content on my site, like the way I can rate tutorials here. I am wondering if i will need to code the user management parts again myself or can i just grab that from somewhere else and add to that code?
Like should I use mambo and let that do all the user authentication and cms stuff and then I just add on what i need? like add in specific rating abilities myself?
I mean no one thinks about writing their own bulletin board anymore they just grab phpbb, smf, etc and mod it. Is it the same for user managment and cms? Should I just grab a package install it and start modding?

Any help would be apprecited!
Great site by the way!  ;)

The forums are Simple Machine Forums, and the site itself is hand-coded. If you want to create a simple CMS with rating and all that stuff, and maybe even a forum, I'd try something like XOOPS. Whatever you do, DO NOT use PHPNuke. It is a CMS with terrible HTML and PHP, next to no CSS, practically nonexistent templating, and a large variety of other things that I don't want to go into. I used it for a recent project, and it has been hard work getting it all to work together. Something like XOOPS, Mambo, or ezPublish would probably work fine for your needs.

If I were you, I would code it all from scratch.  You learn more, you get a good feeling when you complete the project, it is something you can call your own, and best of all....when you want to edit or add something, you done know the code structure and don't have to go in and learn it.

Hi Guys,
thanks for your quick replies, i appreciate it! I have installed xoops and am checking that out. looks like I should be able to get things up and running quickly and just drop in my own code to fill out the areas that dont quite fit. I'll let you know how i get on. Thanks moberemk!
Steelmanronald: I know what you mean, and i think in the future if the site takes off I'll go back and code more of it myself. At the moment I just want to get something up and running to see how it goes, so the less personal coding I have to do the better. I hope i wont get stuck trying to learn someone elses code... been there, done that :( so fingerscrossed!

Thanks for the help guys.
