Image resizing with GD Library

I'm using the GD image library (which I'm not familiar with at all) to resize some thumbnails. Ideally I'd like to resize the fullsize image as well, to a set width of 300px.

 

Here's my code:

This has been bugging me for ages... can anyone point me in the right direction. I've scoured the internet and everything is really beyond me. I'd very much appreciate some help

 

Also, is there any way to set a max file upload size BEFORE they submit (so the user doesn't have to wait ages to be told it's too big).

Anyone have any experience using the PHP GD Library? Or achieving the same with ImageMagick?
