Greetings from a hack scripter that wants to learn more

Greetings,

I categorize myself as a hack scripter.  Hack as in "a writer who is paid to write low-quality, quickly put-together articles or books."  I know enough about javascript, perl and php to modify scripts I am already using (most of the time) and do simple little things but I would like to learn to do more.  I am more proficient in HTML and shell scripting

I would like some advice about which books or tutorials would get me going on a project I am wanting to do.

First of all I am wanting to do a customer database.  This is pretty straight forward and I think I can take the knowledge I already have and do this in an afternoon and evening.  THEN, and this is were I need to add to my skills, I want to make a "service request" database that will let me record requests from clients (that will be in or need to be added to the customer database) that will let me track their day of arrival and departure and what they are requesting.  How to tie the customer database into this second requirement is what I need to learn.  I know php & MySQL will this, I am just unfamiliar with how I can do this.

I am looking for a good book or tutorial that will take me through this.  Any Suggestions?

Paul

Sorry Paul, I moved this thread here, as you posted for book / tutorial reference help in an introductory board.

I'm sure these requests have been made many times.. you can use the search function to look up such threads discussing this.. other members might also come across this with suggestions as well.

You are trying to learn PHP and MySQL?

Take a look here:

Reference:

http://www.php.net

http://www.php.net/manual/en/index.php

http://www.php.net/docs.php

These are the things that helped me the most, I am still learning. I am about to start learning classes. The biggest thing that helped me was trial and error. Oh and phpfreaks. Take a look at my posts in my profile, over half of them are php and mysql questions.

This thread is more than a year old. Please don't revive it unless you have something important to add.
