Start from scratch or Use scripts?

I just finally got a Ubuntu LAMP Server running.

Its mainly for fun nothing serious, I want to get a website started with stuff like a blog, and a photo album.

Some people have told me to just register a domain and server space and they give you that stuff with the package, so thats one option. But seeing as I have a spare desktop with ubuntu installed it cant hurt to do it myself right?

So the question is, should I start from scratch, or are there popular blog scripts and photo-album scripts worth implementing instead? Im fairly new to PHP but I can program well enough to learn.

Thanks!

If you took the time and effort to set up an Ubuntu LAMP server for fun, instead of paying some hosting company for a server and domain that were already set up, then I think you would find it more fun to write your own scripts.

However, don't think that you couldn't learn something valuable by installing pre-made scripts. They would give you a perspective on what other people have done, and what you like and dislike about them can help you write a script that fits your needs perfectly.

Some Popular PHP Blog cripts:

Some Popular PHP Photo Album scripts:

Good luck!  ;)

Thanks! I think ill start with the scripts for now. Im planning a backpacking across europe trip for next summer and hoping by then to have a website up and running where I can travel and update for my friends and family. Basically the blog for new stuff, and the photoalbum for uploading pics and clearing the mem stick while away, plus then my fam/friends dont need to wait till im back to see where I have been ;)

Thanks HeyRay for the links. I got BBlog up and running this morning, but was dismayed that it lacked a photo-gallery plug-in. There is a photo-blog plug-in but the links are mostly dead and there is no documentation. Besides it is just for a picture in a blog entry, and not a gallery.

Another downfall of bblog is its customization. Smarty looks cool and is probably easy to configure, but I was hoping for a more practical way. I wanted to just go in and change the css/php to show what i want but it involved more than that.

Is there a Blog/Gallery in one that has a little more control? BBlog seems more geared towards those who cant read code, let alone type it.

Thanks!
