There are some obscure/creative/interesting usernames out there, and I thought it would be interesting to know where they came from...

Tell your story here!

Even though the more popular definition of effigy is "a crude figure representing a hated person," I prefer "a likeness or image, especially of a person." We're all "in effigy" on the web and we should represent ourselves. I don't like it when people abuse the anonymity of the web and decide to be someone, or something else--often satisfying the first definition of effigy.

^ totally agree

My favorite color is violet and i like to draw outside the lines (the proverbial "think outside the box"), hence the play on words. Crayon Violent.

Okay well actually I like more of a lavender but I couldn't get Crayon Lavender to look as cool.

it is actually pretty common for people to not notice that extra 'n' in there. It's a shame, as I believe it downgrades my name from something totally awesome to somewhat quirky.

so your name is dlanornamleets?  Looks german :D

Anyway, mine is kind of obvious... I love the beer and my numbers are my 2 football numbers when I played football in high school 44 and 56, coincidentally 4,5 and 6 have been 3 numbers that have been part of my life.  My social security number has only those 3 numbers in it (trust me you don't want to guess what it is... my credit is shot and the odds of you trying to pull fraud with it are slim next to none... since someone else already beat you to it :) ).  My son was born at 4:56 AM.

Those are just a few things that I can remember off of the top of my head.

holy crap it's true! if you add 317 to your current post count, you get... 456!!

That may be what's known as a 'special case' rather than universally applicable.

Whatever!! Being a creative genius, I decided to use my first name and the initial of my surname for my username here.  Quite a story!!

My story is this...

When I was in about 8th grade (1995ish), I decided to get my first AOL AIM screenname.  Therefore, having just visited the Cantigny Estate and Museum (see: http://www.rrmtf.org/), seeing an exhibit on "Kilroy was here" (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kilroy_was_Here), I decided to use the name "kilbad" for my handle, which I came up with, obviously, when I tried some variatons of "kilroy."

I had no intentions of implying that "kilbad" ment "kill bad" (which would be an oxymoron) or "to kill the bad."  Honestly, it was the best quasi-creative screenname I could come up with at the time.  Since then, it has grown on me.  However, I must say I do like it in the sense that it is shorter and easy for people to remember (particularly in the days when personal AIM buddy lists did not download everytime one used a new computer).

That's about it..

..keep the stories coming.. I really like them!

Mine comes from the username I got at my first "real" programming job in 1974. The usernames on the system had to be 5 characters long, so it was decided to take the person's last name and strip out the vowels. If the resultant string was less than 5 characters, it was padded with "x" characters until the length was 5. If it was longer than 5, the result was truncated. My last name with the vowels removed turned out to be exactly 5 characters -- "rbnsn". "ken" is my first name. So I've been using "kenrbnsn" or "rbnsn" for my username in various places since then. If you see a "kenrbnsn" on the Internet, it is probably me, but not always. I've found one or two other people using it. I was able to register the domain rbnsn.com in the early 90's when domain names were first sold. I also have "kenrbnsn.com", "kenrbnsn.org" and the variation "bsns.com" (this is to catch a misspelling of my email address that was published).

It's amazing how many people can't spell or pronounce "rbnsn"!  :)

I used to work in door to door sales and worked a ridiculous amount of hours, drinking Redbull (illegal in some countries!) just to keep going. Redbull kinda became my 'quirk', and "Redbull Mark' kinda stuck when people were trying to distinguish between me and other Mark's.
But when I used 'redbullmark' as a username once, it was taken, so i stuck a 'y' on the end.

There you go!

(interesting fact with regards to owning the names - I've not tested on anything else, but for anyone that has FF on the PC, type in 'redbullmarky' into your address bar...)

yes it is my personal site.  i haven't really thouched it in a whiles. i've done odds and ends with it over time.  i used to make some flash cartoons that i had up there.  i think i have a cubecart with some custom clothes i was gonna sell on it right now.  lol, i haven't even gone there in a whiles. I suppose i shall eventually get around to doing something with it again.  I almost started a blog but then i thought blogs are kinda dumb.  My main passion is flash cartoons, so i'll probably end up doing something with that again, eventually.  but not today or tomorrow.

My username is my personel number. I use it every day to login on an ancient SCO server.

I can type blind on the numpad. 448191 is very easy on the numpad, even for those who can't.

I get asked for the meaning of my username a lot. People don't get why you would use only numbers.

Back when I used DC++ for filesharing, I actually kept getting kicked out of hubs because of my username.

'Get a real username', 'we don't talk to numbers', that kind of stuff.

In some cases, registration software refuse my username, saying it 'must contain at least 1 letter' or 'or can't start with a digit'.

Consequently, I'm also known as 'desmad', meaning 'Destructive Madness' (abbr. DM), the name of the graffitti crew I was a part of as an adolescant.

Back then I used the tag 'dane', wich I also sometimes use as a username.

Here's an (old) picture of my devbox with a piece of this tag cut out as window.

I wouldn't wonder if my name is the most oft misspelled on these forums - it, too, is derived from my actual name. The first two letters of my first name (Neal) and my entire last name (Ylitalo). I'm of completely Finnish heritage (as far as we know), and very proud of it. :)

My username stems from a long, uninteresting, process.

I came up with it back in '94.  I was 14 and my family had just subscribed to AOL (yeah yeah, I know...shut up :P).  I was going through that typical angsty teenage geek phase and wanted to come up with something unique, dark, and 'kewl.'  So, one day, in my freshman orientation class in high school, I looked over the shoulder of one of my friends to see what he was reading.  It was a Robert Jordan novel, and the page he was on mentioned the Kinslayer.  I thought that was interesting, but decided to make it 'darker,' so I came up with Nightslayer.  Unfortunately, AOL usernames at that time were limited to ten characters, so I had to modify the last portion of the name to make it fit.

I've kept it ever since as, well, I figured I'd keep a static internet profile (so to speak).  So, yes, chances are any Nightslyr or Nightslayer you find online is me.  I also kept it because I'm too lazy to change my e-mail (which, thankfully, isn't on AOL any longer). ;)
