AJAX/PHP

So I Have this section on my website where people can post comments to an article, I want the comments to just auto update and show up under the article without redirecting the user. I know this is possible with AJAX and I'm on the brink of figuring out how it works.

I checked ajaxfreaks.com but their intro tutorials are actually pretty confusing, since they dont bother to tell you what part of their functions do, or why they do it that way (even in their $_POST part, they tell it to make a URL adjustment without telling you why).

So I'm pretty confused. Can anyone link me to, or explain, how I would go about making (with php/ajax) a form that when filled out and clicked, it auto updates the page and replaces the comment textbox with something that says "Thanks for posting"?
