after waiting nearly 40s for the page to finish loading (fast connection here), it didnt look so bad, but i was immediately greeted with a popup alert box and a popup to an adult site.
also, despite the validation buttons, it doesnt validate.

i'd have given it more time to critique but the popups and load times were really driving me nuts.
cheers

hi
waited a good 15-20 seconds for the site to respond. nothing happened apart from a little text appearing and i got tired waiting.
seriously, i'd address this issue before anything else - you wont have anyone looking at your site if it's gonna continue to take this long to load.
cheers

It loaded slow for me too.

Good stuff:
- left nav
- color scheme
- text and size

Not so good stuff:
- photos (looks kinda cheesy and old)
- red color fonts (header and news)
- need to find a new color for the news title the red is too bold and in-your-face

a good start so far.

are you using some sort of free host supported by ads?
this:
http://www.top66.ro/voted/13926/3731
is the "adult" page that popped up. ok, so its not a pure page of porn - but still. i didnt go to that site, i went to your site - to be amazed by science, not adult personals. if i recall, all i did was click on the 'home' link in your nav. seems to happen randomly rather than all the time. i wouldnt be surprised if the sheer amount of ads you've crammed into the page is the reason for such a slowdown. i'd love to critique your site - but out of principle, not when i'm getting popups of all sorts all over the place.

get rid of that javascript popup (vote for us, etc). for that to appear every time the home page loads is annoying.

I took out that javascript... Does anyone see any popup now?

And... I have a RSS feed on the Home page (it's down there, in the footer section). Could you please put the link (http://www.amazingscience.octopis.com/asfeed.xml) into your feed reader and tell me how it works?

One more thing: is there any way I could have a statistic to know how many people have my RSS feed in their feed readers?

Thanks!

two ways i can think of: restrict it to members or feed it via a PHP script using header function to send the correct MIME types. i personally use the latter, which as well as providing the feed, also allows you to log each request just like a page request - IP address, etc.

could you show me an example of a code that provides the feed and also gets the ip address of the machine that is reading the feed?

i mean... in my site there's this line:

<a href="http://www.amazingscience.octopis.com/asfeed.xml"><img alt="" src="images/rss-available.gif" /></a>

i don't really understand how you "feed" the reader... i don't know what script should i write...

Can you help me with this?

this is where i first went when learning about dynamic RSS:
http://tiffanybbrown.com/2005/12/22/dynamic-rss-feeds-using-php-mysql-and-apache

the above method basically works by discuising a PHP file as an XML/rss file by sending the appropriate headers. now that your "XML" file is actually a PHP file, you can add what you like to it.

as for logging the IP, simply change the above code to suit your needs to store the value of $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR'] in your DB/log file.

redbullmarky > In this case... I'll have to find (or implement) a good script for uploading files. I found some on the web, but not workin' or not as I would want them...
On the other hand, I know how to display pictures in a php page, but I don't know how to do it for sounds and videos... Any ideeas / examples?

RibTime > True. It's just startin'... I made the skeleton of the website and now I'm learning a few more things to make them available on my site. I also have some content that will be uploaded and I'm negotiatig for some news packeges to be imported and displayed on my site. I read about Google Adsense and I thought I could try to learn about it too. There are many ads because i wanted to see how they work. The site is in a beta version. When I'll have it all done, you will barely see the ads...
