Is using a text file for Session Handling a good idea?

I came up with this idea since there are times where I can't access my session variables in other pages so I thought it's better if there's a single file where you store an info if a user is still logged in or not. Is this a good idea or not?

As long as the text file isn't in the world readable folder, I guess it's fine.

Would be nice if you could tell us why as this might come up agin later in the forum so solving this problam helps us all please tell us why cheers.
