Are you a male or female programmer? Teen or Adult. I have never met other teen programers nor female programmers. After voting, add a bit of info about yourself like I have below:

*****************************

My name is Ronald Steelman. I first started programming when I was 14 years old and I am now 18. I don't know as much as I would like, I never will, but I learn more everyday. I am a male of course.

Housni Yakoob, 23 years old (i'm 6 years old mentally :D) male.

i used to work on C++ quite a bit while in school but took a break from coding for a few years, then got into PHP on Jan 2004

a friend of mine is a Java freak and she's female. it's really very hard to find female programmers...but this girl makes up for all the rest...genius!

Ben, male. I've been programming for 8 or 9 years and only got into PHP about a year and a half ago.

I'm more of a system programmer (VB, C, ASM, system specific languages like D2T's Morphee or MTS's VXin) at work, but about half of my job is running our internal lab website (data collection and reporting). I enjoy this stuff more.

Oh, and I'm married, but she's not a programmer at all and I think I like it that way. I did go to college some very talented female programmers, one of which is a very good friend of mine.

my name's Garth Henson. i'm 25, and, i've been doing PHP programming for a little over 2 years now. I am the lead web developer for a university in South Carolina. I do have a base in other languages, although, I pretty much have solely developed with PHP since I started with it.

I'm also married, and I agree with ober: i'm glad she's not a programmer. i've also met a few female programmers, some of which are rather good, i might add. they definitely bring a new focus onto some of the issues.

There are several girls that post on this site... they just haven't found this thread. No biggie. And it's not like female programmers are all that special. "ooooh... they know how to use a computer AND they have a vagina!?!?!?!?!"

It's like having you around, except they know how to use a computer!

OOOOOOOOOOOHHH ICE BURN!

;) j/k

Several.  It remains a male-dominated field, but trust me, there are plenty of female programmers out there.  And their numbers are growing.

i'll add to that that most of the female programmers that i've met (those who have some experience) can usually produce more efficient and cleaner code than a lot of guys i know. they tend to not have the push that guys do to "just get the job done"...

i know that i'd hire a female programmer any day! lol

  • 2 weeks later...

Reading these replies make me feel really OLD :-)

I'm, male, 54. I've been in the computer field for over 30 years. I started created straight HTML web sites in 1993 or 1994. I learned PHP in 1999 and added MySQL in 2000.

I am still learning to produce better PHP code.

My next big challenge is to start learn PHP5 and OO coding. (I was in college when the structured programming revolution took place)

And, yes, I do remember using punch cards, TTY-33 terminals, Selectric typewrites for terminals, 300 baud dial-up lines (the fastest you could get was 9600 baud), and no Internet. (although I did roam the ARPAnet in 1974 or 75)

kenrbnsn, don't feel old - I'm only 26, but knowing how many <18 year olds are on this board - and seeing how much MORE they know then me makes me feel like I'm 90.

So yeah, I am also married. My wife turns 25 next month and is not a programmer by any stretch of the imagination. I love trying to show her things I've worked on and she says, "it looks exactily like it did 3 days ago when you showed me" and I say, "I know, but now it queries in half the time and uses session variables to store color preferences..." and she's not even in the room anymore before I finish the sentence.

I work in Hartford, CT for a national Insurance Brokerage Firm. I'm a "Web Design Specialist" for their Intranet development division. My title is misleading as most of my duties are just content managment. (I'm looking to move on if anyone is looking for a PHP application developer in the Hartford area?)

I generally only program in web environments. I started building my first HTML pages in 1996 when I was in High School. (not quite punch cards, but I did only have a 28.8 modem) I started using php and mysql about 4 years ago and have been working professionally at my current job since early 2003.

I'm mostly self taught (trial and error, "for dummies" books and google)

my major in college was actually music theory -- i wanted to write and produce teen idol pop music.

In answer to the gender question: I have a good friend who is both a programmer AND a female. Of course, she is a microsoft lemming and only works in .NET but apperently that is where the money is, because she makes 3x more then me.

ps - sweet burn Ober! (post: Aug 30 2005, 08:18 AM)

Well, I am glad I am not the oldest. I am 49 and male and been in the computer field for 30+ years, mostly in BASIC. I have been picking up PHP for the last year or so and am now taking it as a graduate course in college.

My wife also has been a programmer for 25 years. So women do program : )

I started on an old ASR33 teletype with paper tape backup and suction cups for the phone headset. Top speed was 110 baud. When I went to college I graduated to punch cards and lineprinters.

that's awesome! i've actually tinkered with some of those before. i started with basic for about 4 years in jr high and high school. i love seeing the older generation (no offence meant at all, as i have great respect for you all) willing to continue learning and changing to keep up with technology. to all of you on here who feel outdated, please stick around, because from my experience (limited though it may be in my few years), i've found that those who trained with the old languages and systems that required much more precision often have the best practices, and we can all stand to learn some things from you all. so, all this to say, my hat is off to those of you who have been around and seen things some of us have only heard of. thanks for sticking with it!

Wow you are all so old, I'm only 15, I know CSS, HTML, started with PHP/MySQL about 6 months ago, and i have internet only the first year of my life
translates to: "I'm a newb..."

:P

Being young and good at the technology is nothing.

Being old(er) AND good at new technology, though, that's super cool. I can't wait until I'm 50 and saying "Yep... you probably don't remember it, but I used to code in PHP!" and still keeping up with the new technology.

I'm impressed with those of you who know how cool it is to have 9600 baud AND know how to write PHP, et al. Allow me to electronically shake your hand. SYN.

A: "GUESS HOW OLD I AM!!"

A: "GUESS HOW OLD I AM!!"

B: "Nobody really cares mate"

A: "GUESS HOW OLD I AM!!"

A: "I AM ONLY 8!!! DO YOU THINK I AM GOOD?!!?!!!1"

B: "Sure, whatever."

A: "MAN I AM SO 1337!!! I AM OWNING YOU ALL LOLZZ1!!!! I ONLY STARTED PLAYING YESTRDYA!!!Q"

B: "Right."

-> Player A kicked from server.
