font style specifier

Hello,
I am trying to get a text replacement script working and I have run into a problem. I want the text replaced by a truetype font that is in a file with other styles of the font, I wanted to know if there is a way to specify a style or name for php to grab the right font style. It works with the font file but it seems to default to the bold italic version.
Any help would be great.
