I have a site which receives images by FTP upload into a dedicated directory.  (The standard http file upload doesn't allow large enough files.)  An image needs to be processed in various ways such as creating a thumbnail.  How can I cause an application or script to be run when a new image arrives?  This should happen asynchronously, not as part of standard page handling.  My site is running on a Linux server.

How do you plan to have this script executed? Since most php scripts are run when they are requested by some one over the internet, I don't see how you could have a script that would be executed based on when there are new pictures, or even a script that is run on a regular basis.
