Cookie dropping to recognize a visitor

Hi

Can you help with my logic here please.
 

I have screen 1 with an optin form to an autoresponder
When visitor drops in their email, they get to screen 2

(the thankyou page) with a free tool

 

Is there a service or piece of software
that can track them to know if they

have subscribed to the autoresponder

Then  deliver screen 1 or 2 accordingly?

ie. screen 1 if they have not subscribed

screen 2 if they have subscribed

A cookie works, but only until it is deleted. The only real way to know if a user has done something is to create an account for him and store relative information. Any other method is unreliable.

I was thinking along the lines of a cookie
that is dropped into a visitiors browser.

Is there a program you know of that might do that?
