Which Forum software?

As with any software it would be nice to believe that it does what it says on the box (or web site…) but alas, it is never so.

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls I need your recommendations for a forum script. It needs to meet the following criteria and I would value your opinions.

1. Customisable: I want it to visually blend into the site so colours, fonts and graphics need to be adjustable.

2. Administration: for now it’s just me running the site so easy admin would be a boon.

3. Filtering: being able to filter out some of the less suitable language. As I said on a few other forums I have a site which when relaunched will be aimed at a targeted adult audience (not that ADULT, just not for children) but by the very nature of the site they will come… and I have a script that strips email addresses from posts but having this built in would be a boon.

4. Membership: either a separate login or preferably using the main sites user login.

5. open source, freeware or dirt cheap would be good but if the right software has a price then ok….

Once again, I am indebted to you

well i'm a firm beliver that its (allways)better to make it yourself,

this way you can insert any option you need without the bloat, and without the price

My Php aint all that hot yet... we shall see, but for now i may have to buy my forum... any other contenders?

Here are a few boards that require payment:

[a href=\"http://www.invisionboard.com/ip.dynamic/products/board/index.html\" target=\"_blank\"]Invision Power Board[/a] - what this site uses (recommended)

[a href=\"http://www.vbulletin.com/\" target=\"_blank\"]VBulletin[/a]

Here are a few that is free to use:

[a href=\"http://www.phpbb.com/\" target=\"_blank\"]phpBB[/a] - Quite old and has a few security issue at times, but the developers are quick to fix any holoes.

[a href=\"http://www.mybboard.net/\" target=\"_blank\"]MyBB (MyBulletin Board[/a] - Very good forum, quite new and very secure! (recommended)

[a href=\"http://www.simplemachines.org/\" target=\"_blank\"]Simple Machines[/a]

I have placed (recommended) in both categories.

MyBB I would recommend due to the ease of use and has prety much what IPB and Vbulletin have all for free!! Easy to use Admin Panel, although it hasn't got lots of themes but the devolpers are starting to make it alot more easier for you to make themes! Also for the email thing just request for a mod that can do what you want, allot of people do make mods for mybb on request.

IPB isn't free but well worth it, $69.95 per yearly license, lots of themes/mods avaible for IPB, although the Admin Panel has lots and lots of configuration options avaible it can be a little advanced. As I said above This si what phpfreaks.com uses!

So if you want to go for the free option take myBB or if you want the paid option take IPB!

Hope that helps.
