How do you know the connection is slow? You have to wait some amount of time and check if the image loaded. If not then you try another image? What if that's too slow? What if you interrupted the image while it's loading? You know that common image types have a special behavior for when they're being loaded slowly? You'll be throwing that away.


People with slow connections are used to stuff being slow. If you want to help out those on mobile connections then try CSS's media queries: you can load smaller images for smaller devices and larger images for larger (and presumably faster) devices.
