[SOLVED] Select statement with a $_POST variable as the where clause

I would like to take the input from a form as the where clause in a select statement to get id number for the variable in question and post this into a database table.  

 

I have tried a few things but i can not seem to populate the $school variable with anything

 

$schoolname = ($_POST['school']);
$school = mysql_query("SELECT school_id FROM tbl_school WHERE schoolname = $schoolname);
or
$school = mysql_query("SELECT school_id FROM tbl_school WHERE schoolname =". $_POST['school']);

If the name is a string, it needs to be in quotes in your sql.

$schoolname = $_POST['school'];

$school = mysql_query("SELECT school_id FROM tbl_school WHERE schoolname = '$schoolname'");
