I just downloaded and installed apache on my redhat box (yes i know redhat sucks), but whenever I try to start it it says:

 Error 

Failed to start apache :
[Thu Jan 16 18:35:25 2003] [emerg] (22)Invalid argument: Couldn\'t set permissions on cross-process lock; check User and Group directives
[Fri Jan 17 14:50:33 2003] [warn] pid file /usr/local/apache2/logs/httpd.pid overwritten -- Unclean shutdown of previous Apache run?

I\'m using webmin, if that matters. PLEASE HELP!

do not talk bad about red hat :P

what are the Group and User directives in the httpd.conf?

change your user and group to something else. apache/apache or www/www for example. then make sure that user/group owns everything in htdocs.
