need help in my list menu

i need help, i have a form with the list menu option in my edit form

and this is my current code

                          <option value="" selected="selected">by brands</option>
                          <?
		$uSql = "SELECT brand_name FROM engsoon_brands ORDER by brand_name DESC";
		$uResult = mysql_query($uSql, $connection);
		if(!$uResult){

here what i wanted to happen is that if the brand_name from engsoon_brands is the current brand_name of that item i am editing

it will echo or print the selected.

 

however, its not working and the list item's value and name is blank

Avoid <?= since short tags may not be enabled. Use <?php echo instead.

 

Also, the correct method of identifying a selected item is selected='selected' not just selected
