Ok, first of all....to the admin/site managers...
I'm sorry for posting in this area if you feel that this doesn't apply I won't be offended if its taken down.

I was looking not so much for a personal critique, but a critique of places to get ideas for different site design and layouts. And yes I have looked at Resources post. I'm not so much looking for code but the inspiration that comes from other great resouce links. If you have a favorite please share...

Thanks for reading my post...

You could read through some of the other posts here.... or are you looking for sites that we think look good?

If it's the second:

www.forgetfoo.com (warning: some of his designs aren't Opera friendly... but he does some amazing stuff and changes the layout fairly regularly)
www.joelonsoftware.com - nothing fantastic, but it's simplistic and I like it
pretty much anything by jcombs_31 who posts here pretty regularly
and obviously css zen garden, which you have in your sig

I'm continually sifting through this massive site to find out inspiration....

So I guess I'm not going to limit it. Sites you think look good and those that you go to for inspiration for making other website design. I guess that's what i'm asking... lol

thanks for posting ober

Ober, just have this to say: you are the only person I know who actually uses Opera.
make that two then. ober, opera really kicks ass and is possibly as fast as you'd like a browser to be for now, so i thank your constant 'opera this opera that' for converting me, both on my mac and pc. lack of opacity and a few other things really suck, but hey i've only ever used opacity once before anyway, and it's rare.

as for the original point from titangf - look outside the box. most people i see with good sites tend not to work within the 'constraints/restrictions' of the web, but seem to look beyond that at general good design. ie, if it can be drawn on paper and you want it to work, then put a bit of effort and it's not massively hard to turn an idea into a web page. dont just look at other websites for inspiration. look in magazines and books, on the TV, etc.

there's my quid's worth.

edit: one more thing - ober - any particular 'other' reasons why [a href=\"http://www.forgetfoo.com/\" target=\"_blank\"]http://www.forgetfoo.com/[/a] is appealing to you? lol

And actually... you can make that three... for opera (its always nice to be able to see what your site will do under different browsers)

thanks redbull, that is something that I try to do (at least when it comes to books and tv). I'll try to get some resources together and work on some magizines... Its just that some days i can come up with tons of ideas and others... well they don't like to come out. I'm just trying to work on being able to design something worthwhile at least once/twice a day.

Thanks for the input and for what its worth...
well... you can put it into a Mastercard commercial...

"Computer.... 1200 dollars"
"Online connection... 10 dollars"
"Advice from your peers..... Priceless!"

Hmm... Okay, I retract my statement then. I stand corrected. I never did think that there were that many people who used Opera though... Guess I'll have to start testing in it then.
As for the site, I noticed something: you use image rollovers for your navbar. Isn't that something that you could do much better with CSS? And without so much messy javascript code that Dreamweaver wrote for you?

Mark,

Are you saying you don't like the site, or are you referring to the NSFW material he blogs about? ;-)

And moberemk, I know a lot of people that use Opera. It really is a great all around browser. Sure, it has it's issues, and doesn't do some things well or at all (opacity being one, but I think they're fixing that).

If nothing else, its user base has probably doubled since they stopped charging for it. It's definately worth testing your websites against it.

EDIT: BTW, does anyone know of a site that uses opacity so I can test it on the latest version of Opera (Preview 2, some weekly version)

i was greeted by some rather nice pictures.... :)

you can try the opacity checks out against mine if you like: [a href=\"http://www.crashandburn.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\"]http://www.crashandburn.co.uk[/a]
and there are some examples here: [a href=\"http://cssplay.co.uk/opacity/index.html\" target=\"_blank\"]http://cssplay.co.uk/opacity/index.html[/a]

cheers

That works in the latest weekly of Opera! :) And the comments say that it worked since the early releases of Opera 9. So I guess that'll soon be a thing of the past. :)

As far as your site, I guess I'm not sure where you're using the Opacity.

And yeah, foo puts up some racy photos from time to time ;-)

just where the colours overlap at the edges (topleft, bottomleft). but if the css play one works, that's where i learnt about opacity anyway so even better!
