php and smarty help

Hi i am developing a site using php and smarty templates, im wondering if its possible to call a function in my php file from my smarty template, the php file is not a class or anything its just a normal file, it looks like this:

<?php

....

$smarty->display(index.tpl);

etc.....

function test() {
print "hello";
}

.....

?>

is it possible to call that function from within the template file if so, how? or would i have to move it to the template file to call that function?
