displaying japanese

Hello,

I am trying to build a site with a language selector.

The problem is that the japanese is often displayed as scrambled text.

I guess there is a way to tell the browser what language you want to display but I can not find it.

Can anyone point me to a solution (webpage, tutorial)

you can take a look at possible scrambled japanese here
(language selector is not online yet)

I use mozilla firefox 1.5.0.2 to display my pages. The text is displayed correctly if I select the correct language in the view -> character encoding menu

Kind regards

Hope that is of help - its best to define the character set in the head part of the page using meta tags.

thank you this is a step in the right direction.

do you know if it is possible to define separate languages in cells of tables ?
I am working on a dictionary that displays japanese and french.
If I put the meta content to japanese, the french is unreadable and if I put it to western character set then the japanese is unreadable.

kind regards
