Need server side anti-virus scanning software

toplay

Recommended Posts

Please post if you know of any good free or inexpensive Linux (Apache) server side software that will scan for viruses on uploaded and downloaded files. This is the top priority.

Optionally, it would be nice if it can also scan incoming and outgoing email file attachments (but that could be a separate piece of software if necessary).

It's for a small size company that manages it's own servers and has about 30 employees. We're not really entertaining the idea of using a third-party online service. A product to load on our servers is best.

Just to be clear, this is not about scanning for viruses on desktops computers or within email client programs.

I'm just going to start researching this starting with Symantec and McAfee but I suspect that their solutions maybe costly.

I prefer if you post a link directly to the recommended product.

Thanks in advance for the help.

AVG is the way to go, IMO. I wouldn't trust McAfee any farther than I could throw them and Symantec has been ok here where I work, but I honestly feel like Grisoft makes a better product and will cost you less in the long run.

Thanks Ober. Their file server protection looks promising especially considering the price. Their email server protection looks too costly though since their license is by how many mailboxes are protected (100 for 2 years is $1,030). We have over 19,000 mailboxes. However, they do include the file server protection with their email server product.

I couldn't find a phone number to call them, so I have an email out to them about their products.

Anyone else have any products that will work on Red Hat Linux 8?

ClamAV is good, but if you want it to check all uploads and downloads, it'll be a rather large drain on system resources.

Thanks neylitalo. There's not always going to be a lot of people uploading files especially concurrently. Mostly dispersed downloading.

neylitalo, are you talking from direct experience of using ClamAV causing a "drain on system resources", or are you speculating? If it's direct experience, please provide what Linux box/server and CPU speed, memory etc. was used in your case. And what happened in more detail please.

The free choice right now is ClamAV:

We currently use SpamAssassin to filter out Spam: [a href=\"http://spamassassin.apache.org\" target=\"_blank\"]http://spamassassin.apache.org[/a]

There is however a free SpamAssassin third party ClamAV plug-in that will allow scanning for viruses on email attachments: [a href=\"http://wiki.apache.org/spamassassin/ClamAVPlugin\" target=\"_blank\"]http://wiki.apache.org/spamassassin/ClamAVPlugin[/a]

I haven't looked closely at these but I thought to list them for members that might be interested:
