Apache chroot and PHP

ok, I've got my PHP working, most of my scripts work until I go to update/write a text file...I get no errors from the script, but then again, the files are never updated. I expect this to be a problem with permissions as I'm also having problems getting MySQL to run under the chrooted Apache. Apache seems to be running as user nobody even though in the httpd.conf file it says it's supposed to be www:www. I've tried several online suggestions, but none of them work and I was hoping some of you PHPers knew a little bit about Apache 1.3 with OpenBSD 3.8
