Php & phpmyadmin trouble

Hi All, Please help me .. I am a newbie.. I was trying to install PHPMyAdmin with PHP. I use mysql 3. I could not install the software. Is it necessary I should use mysql 4 or later for installing PHPMyAdmin ? Please clarify.. Thanx in advance
