as stupid as it sounds, i tend to just hit a site like http://www.codango.com/ and browse around...if I see a script idea that seems interesting, but feel its something I could recreate in a more effective manner in some way or other...I go after it. This makes you learn some n ew stuff while really analyzing the end result based on usability and practicality...just a fun little excercise for me personally.
Now, inarguably, I could have time much better invested if I would just focus on a bigger project of some sort...but I tend to be too easily disinterested after a while.
Good luck in your quest.

Hey, I dont have much firsthand experience on those kinds of scripts, but I know I've seen many in the past on http://www.codango.com/ so you may have luck finding something. I grabbed you links for the web app and library categories...hope something turns up thats useful if the already provided customized choice doesnt work out

In all honesty, if you are interested start taking a look of the code of open source php form applications.
This is a great idea...I've always learned the most tearing into projects pepole have already done...
http://www.codango.com/ has a bunch of forum applications you could experiment with. One of them may already do exactly what you want anyway.
Good luck though

Hey, I remember this utter confusion once upon a time too
I ended up finding some nice helper WAMP applications from http://www.codango.com/...though looking at it again I cant recall which...lol, how sad is that?
Anyway, check it out on the site and see if one of the automated installers gets you on track
Good luck!
