dynamic images from pdf

Hello everyone. I have a bit of a problem that you may be able to help me on. I have a project i am working on to create a searchable db like the one found at the below url. The problem isnt getting a search function working. The problem is how do I have an image created of a pdf file to show up dynamically so I dont have to store both the pdf file and an image file. This db and website will be storing thousands of pdfs for download and figured it would be easier to just store the pdf and take a snapshot of the pdf as search results are loaded as opposed to storing say 3,000 pdfs and 3,000 images to load.  The site below will allow someone to search for a particular type of molding. It somehow based on the search results takes temporary snapshots of the pdf for the search result so that it can conserve space.  Heres the url.

If anyone can help walk me through something similar it would be greatly appreciated.
