NuSOAP digest authentication without a 401 response

I have a server which grants a greater degree of access to digest authenticated users but doesn't ever send a 401. I am trying to set up digest authentication based on this article http://www.beanizer.org/site/index.php/en/Articles/SugarCRM-integration-website-session-and-SOAP-session.html

 

Because the authentication headers don't come back with a successful 200 response I can't think how to get the nonce, qup, realm stuff to stick in my digest request. Is there any other function I can use to specifically request this information?
