problems with javascript editor

hi guys well im trying to use a javascript editor similar to the one on the forum, its working PERFECT in firefox however in internet explorer lets say you start out with:

 

lol

 

you then without selecting anything press a button eg bold you get (ignore the random brackets btw its a replacement for [])

lol{b}lol{\b}lol

 

you get the exact same result if you select it and press a button as well,

 

in firefox however if you simply press the button you will get

lol{b}{\b}

 

or if you select it you will get

{b}lol{\b}

 

please help me guys,
