Results in table

How do you get results from a database to go from side-to-side, instead of up & down?

I've done this before, but for the life of me, I cannot remember how.

I have 54 records that I want to display.

9 across, and 6 down.

How is this done?

Thanks in advance

last part of script

// clean up table - makes your code valid!
if($i < $max_columns)
{
    for($j=$i; $j<$max_columns;$j++)
        echo "<td> </td>";
}
?>
</tr>
</table>

must be

// clean up table - makes your code valid!
if($i > 0) // $i is always be less then $max_columns
{
    for($j=$i; $j<$max_columns;$j++)
        echo "<td> </td>";
}
?>
</tr>
</table>
