Finding windows references

I have two html pages. One opens the other with code like this:

newWin = window.open("page.htm", "newWin");

Once that happens I can reference the opened window without any problems, but if I want the parent window to be able to navigate or refresh, how can I keep the reference to the opened window? I thought there was a way to get a list of window names like you can get a list of other elements, but I can't seem to figure it out. If I refresh the parent window, it will simply say "'newWin' is undefined."

Thanks for any help
