sending emails with php

I'm sending an email with php but for some reason if I have "<br />" in the email, it displays the actual text

 

here's an example

 

$message = "Name: " . $name . "<br /> " .

  "Artist: " . $artist . " ";

 

Then when I send the email, it actually displays <br />. How can I have the breaks in the email? Thanks!

what do you mean by that? Do you have some words missing in your post? Anyway, if you want to have line break (you dont mention what type of break), then

$message = "Name: " . $name . "\nArtist: " . $artist;
