As a newbie I have read several existing postings on this subject but haven't yet been able to solve my problem so any hellp would be very much appreciated.

I'm trying to set up Apache, PHP and MySQL on my standalone PC with Windows XP in order to learn how to create database web sites. I installed all three packages using the windows installer versions and MySQL appears to be running fine. When I installed Apache (as a service) I got the "It Works Fine" page up and I thought everything was working okay. But now I can't get the server to start.

I've tried using the Apache Service Monitor and clicking on start but a get a Could Not Start message.

I've tried through Admin Tolls > Services and I get a Couldn't Start message.

The System Event Log shows three messages -

  • Successfully sent start control
  • Service entered stop state
  • Error message service terminated with service specific error 1 (Ox1).

The Apache Server Error log file has not entries i.e., the file is completely empty.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Update: 18th July 2008. I've now tried various port checkers and they all say that Port 80 is free.
