[SOLVED] Installing another application package that contains Apache

Hi,

Would appreciate if some seniors could shed some light here. I am about to install an application that comes in a big binaries package that contains Apache, PHP, mapserver ( the actual application that I want), etc.

The original authors of the application package probably assembled the package to help novices avoid configuration and library problems.

However, I already have Apache and PHP on my personal XP machine and am comfortable with it as it is. Being a novice, I am wary of what the big application package would do to my existing Apache, PHP and especially other personal files in the htdocs directory.

a.   Would it upgrade my old existing Apache and PHP seamlessly?

b.   Do I have to reconfigure some files all over again (my heart is throbbing)?

c.   Do I have to backup my htdocs directory and some other files as precaution?

Would appreciate some expert help and advise on how to go about this. Many thanks.

Hi wildteen88,

Point noted. This alone will be saving me from countless hours of hair pulling.

Are you familiar with the mapserver application? If you are, your advise would be most appreciated on how best to install it.  What I have in mind is something similar to this website - http://www.fsbomadison.com/madison-real-estate-map.asp

Could you please have a look at the website and perhaps steer me in the right direction?

Many thanks.

wildteen88,

I have browsed through the Google Maps Api. Your suggestion, as far as I have seen, is spot on for serving maps. The Google Maps Api has many plus points.

a.   The tutorials and instructions are first class. Novices take note.

b.   It  solves some daunting web hosting problems, I think.

c.   I could find a satellite image of my little house, and I live in a country most ppl have never heard of.

Your posts on this topic are much appreciated. Well done and thanks.
