php 5 & mysql 5 dispaly problem

Hi,

I have installed these versions on my local machine....Intel Mac....to test before we upgrade the server. Everything is fine except.......

I have an application that we use on campus for teaching of Japanese. Japanese characters are stored in the db using the correct encoding. A query using phpmyadmin retirns the correct data, however, a query on the web page just returns question marks. Some hard coded Japanese on the page displays correctly, but the data retrieved from the db does not. As I say, everything was going just fine until the update to php 5 and mysql 5. All other applications run as per normal, it's just this 2 byte Japanese characters that won't display. Is there something I'm missing here??
