Encryption on a presonal section ONLY

Greetings, I need help on encrypting a section of my website.

 

I want to have a public home page, then if a link is clicked it will lead to a personal section that I want to be encrypted.

 

I've tried using the htpasswd encryption method that prompts a user name and password log in when the website is visited. The problem is that I don't want the home page to be encrypted, only my personal section.

 

How do I get this done? Thanks in advance.

What I've tried so far:

I placed the .htaccess file inside the folder I want encrypted, but when I visit the homepage it prompts the log in information... even though the .htaccess file is not inside the home page folder.
