query on a field that isn't created ???

I have a system that generates a record to record a logged call. If an e-mail is entered it auto-gens a reply. I need to run a report on all logged call without an e-mail to send snail mail replies. BUT the system only generates an e-mail field in the database if an e-mail is supplied so I can run a simple select * where e-mail IsNull.

 

Any ideas ??
